Type Locality and Naming

Named after the city of Kulyab, Tajikistan. B. A. Borneman, 1931 (116, p.17). Identified by A. for the Tajik Depression as sv. Stratotype on the right bank of the Yakhshu River, opposite the city of Kulyab. In the mountains, it forms the highest terraces. It was used in the stratigraphic scheme of Quaternary deposits (A.I. Kim et al., 2000).

Synonym: Kulyab Series, Кулябская сер., Kulob Gr (Cyrillic to English variation); Kulyab series


Lithology and Thickness

Alluvial, alluvial-proluvial clays, loams, sandstones, pebbles, conglomerates, gypsum. Thickness 200-500 m.

Subsequently, the Kulyab “Fm” was elevated to the rank of a complex (more correctly – series/group) (444) and divided in Tajikistan into two formations: at the bottom - the Kuruksay Fm (269), at the top - the Kayrubak Fm (270).


Lithology Pattern:

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It lies with angular unconformity on the Sayrob Fm, on different thicknesses of the Paleogene and Neogene

Upper contact

It is unconformably overlain by the Vakhsh Gr.

Regional extent

Tajik Depression, Tajikistan, South Uzbekistan. In Uzbekistan, it has limited distribution.

Fossils

Contains ostracods - Darwinula schneiderae Suzin., Ilyocypris bradyi Sars., I. tuberculata (Brady), Candona sp., C. (Candona) aff. schubinae Mand., Cyprideis littoralis (Brady), C. sp., Limnocythere vara Liepin, of which the first and last forms characterize the lower link of the Neopleistocene of Uzbekistan, while the others have a wide vertical distribution.

Later (268), in the lower part of the suite in Tajikistan, remains of Stenon's horse (Equus stenonis Cocchi) were found, a guiding form of the Ily fauna complex of the late Pliocene; near Obi-Garma, remains of mammals Dicerorhinus cf. etruscus Falc., Equus caballus cf. mosbachensis (Reich.), Gazella sp., similar to representatives of the Koshkurgan fauna complex, corresponding to the Early Quaternary (in the old sense).


Age 

A. provisionally assigned the formation to the Quaternary period, at the Interdepartmental Conference (382), the Kulyab “Fm” was attributed to the Early Quaternary.According to T.M. Kremlyakova, the Kulyab Gr likely belongs to the Eopleistocene-lower link of the Neopleistocene. B. I. Pinhasov, based on organic remains and paleomagnetic data, believes that the age of the Kulyab Gr should be dated within the late Pliocene-Eopleistocene.
